Elegant tern divebomb
This Elegant tern was captured at Elkhorn Slough near Moss Landing, where they are numerous. When the tide is right, small fish swimming in the shallow water are easy prey for the terns, making the terns - despite their speed - easier prey for my camera.
This one is mid-transition from hover (to determine a target) to highspeed plunge-dive, as you can see from the stretched neck, and wings that are being tucked back. I probably have 700 more shots off all phases of the dive, but I thought this was a nice asymmetric pose with lots of negative space!
